HOW TO APPLY AMES'® SAFE-T-DECK
NON-SKID, GRANULATED SAFETY PAINT

Difficulty Level: EASY

(Plywood & Roof Deck Applications)
Read all label instructions before beginning. Remove all loose paint, dirt, oil and grease leaving the surface clean and dry. All major cracks, joints and seams should be caulked with a Ames' Blue Max trowel-grade coating and filler. Do not use a silicone caulk. Make sure the surface is as smooth as possible. Be certain you adhere to all building codes and environmental considerations when preparing and cleaning surfaces.

2. Seam Tape Cracks, Joints and Seams
All surfaces with joints, cracks, flashings or where two unlike surfaces come together will require seam taping to provide additional strength and reinforcement. Ames’ Peel & Stick Seam Tape (PS250, PS450, PS650) is ideal for plywood, roof decks and other smooth surfaces.

More about Seam Tape

1. When using Lightweight Seam Tape or Contouring Seam Tape (LST60, CST100), brush and prime with a liberal coat of Super Elasto-Barrier, about 6 inches wide, over the seam, crack or joint.

2. Roll out seam tape into the wet coating. Using the paint brush, press the seam tape smoothly into the coating to ensure it lays flat to the surface without air bubbles or pockets.

3. While still wet, brush another coat of Super Elasto-Barrier over the seam tape to completely saturate and embed it into the coating. Allow to dry 1-2 hours or as long as required to cure. Recoat with Elasto-Barrier after drying. Poorly drained surfaces with pooling water requires Super Elasto-Barrier as a prime coat for Safe-T-Deck.

3. Pour a Little Out and Paint It On
Topcoat with 1 to 3 coats of Safe-T-Deck as needed to properly seal the surface to a watertight system. Always run a test patch in an inconspicuous area first to ensure that the product adheres and dries properly and works for you. Do not proceed unless the product works totally to your satisfaction.

Concrete Floors
Concrete floors should be wire brushed and power-washed. In certain situations a shot-blaster may be needed to roughen the surface. Do not apply Safe-T-Deck over damp or decomposing concrete. Repair the concrete and allow to cure for up to 30 days prior to application of Safe-T-Deck. Concrete should be approximately 6 inches above ground water. Read all label instructions before beginning. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area, to ensure that proper adhesion and drying occurs and the product works to your satisfaction. Topcoat with two coats of Safe-T-Deck. Areas where water is standing during winter months may require annual maintenance. Some decks may need recoating annually because of potentially severe weather conditions. Some surfaces may require priming with Super Elasto-Barrier.

SAFE-T-DECK - SPECIFICATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

Roof Deck Architectural Specifications

How to waterproof a roof deck with Ames' Safe-T-Deck

  • Prime difficult areas, such as concrete, vinyl or EPDM with Ames' Super Primer; 5 gallons per 1500 square feet.
  • This is only a suggested specification. Read all label instructions before beginning. Always run a test patch first in an inconspicuous area, to ensure that proper adhesion and drying occurs and the product works to your satisfaction.

Weather and Drying Guidelines
Safe-T-Deck is best applied between 40 to 90 degrees F. with less than 50% humidity on warm, dry surfaces. Apply when the sun is in the sky, when the streets are dry and there is no inclement weather. Allow for adequate drying. Allow from one to eight hours to cure. During hot summer days the surface may have a slight tack. Applications during low temperatures, high humidity and poor ventilation, may require increased drying or curing time.

Estimated Coverage
Standard product coverage is one gallon per 100 sq. feet. Rough surfaces may require additional coating. Most decks will need 2 to 3 coats. Roof decks with roof fabric will need 5 coats.
